EDGING AN ISLAND
Taattinen Gallery
Merimasku
18.7.-29.8.2025
The exhibition Edging an Island continues my exploration of islands as spaces with seemingly clear physical boundaries. Yet, as Tove Jansson writes in Moominpappa at Sea (1965): "There are no bridges to the island, no fences along its shore; you cannot leave it, and yet you cannot be held captive." Islands hold countless stories—utopias, dystopias, places of refuge or confinement—always feeling slightly detached from the world, where rules seem self-made.
My artistic research weaves together the histories and ecologies of islands with narratives of women’s lives, interpreted through textile art. Drawing on traditional Finnish weaving symbolism, Karelian embroidery patterns, and Finno-Ugric mythology, my pieces blend organic elements with the unpredictability of working with recycled textiles and yarns. I see textile work as a form of soft activism and feminism, rooted in slowness and care.
The exhibition features tapestries, patchwork textile pieces, and small wooden sculptures.
